Greta Gerwig‘s Barbie film grossed $1 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing picture directed by a woman. Only two films have surpassed the $1 billion mark this year: Barbie and The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
Warner Bros. Pictures released Barbie in theaters on July 21, 2023. It premiered alongside Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, which also grossed $500 million worldwide.

She told Mattel that the film could gross a billion dollars, though she admits she may have exaggerated. Robbie stated, “I think my presentation in the green-light meeting was that the studios have thrived so much when they are bold enough to pair a huge idea with a visionary director.” Robbie went on to say, “I think my pitch in the green-light meeting was that the studios have prospered so much when they are brave enough Then I presented a series of examples, such as dinosaurs and Steven Spielberg, citing everything that has been fantastic and produced a lot of money for the studios throughout the years. And now you’ve got Barbie and Greta Gerwig, I thought. And I believe I told them it would make a billion bucks, which may have been overstated, but we had a movie to make, okay?
