The next film Maria, starring Angelina Jolie, by Pablo Larra n, could begin filming in October 2023 and conclude in December 2023 in Budapest. It will tell the turbulent, beautiful, and sad story of Maria Callas, one of the world’s finest opera singers.
According to the Budapest Reporter, Jolie will return to Hungary after a 13-year absence to star in a film directed by Pablo Larra n. In the film Maria, Jolie will play the great opera singer Maria Callas. The film centers on Callas’ final years in Paris, and it is Larrain’s first film shot in Budapest, which serves as a stand-in for Paris.
The story of Callas has captivated Larrain. She was a Greek immigrant who rose to fame as a soprano, had a romance with Aristotle Onassis, and suffered heartbreak before dying at the age of 52.

In an interview with Variety in June 2023, Larra ña stated, “I’m extremely happy to have a chance to finish this process of depicting women who changed the fate of the twentieth century, culturally speaking.” She went on to say, “But admiration is not enough to make a movie.” And, of course, going to the process of listening to and following them, like I have done before with Natalie Portman and Kristen Stewart. I lack the ability to understand the character until a brilliant actor, in this case Angelina Jolie, provides their interpretation. It’s an exciting opportunity to work with Angelina, a fearless and inquisitive artist. A genuine present.
Apartment Pictures, German Komplizen Films, and the US-based Fremantle Media Company collaborated on the film. Directors Pablo Larrain and Juan de Dios Larrain collaborated on it. Before travelling to Budapest, Larran will attend the Venice feature Festival to promote his latest feature, El Conde. In the meantime, Jolie is wrapping up postproduction on her film Without Blood.
The release date for Maria is yet unknown.
